Track-by-track guide to Nightwish's new album 'Imaginaerum'

We've heard the new Nightwish album, and as it's amazing, we thought we'd present to you are track-by-track guide.





Nightwish's sixth album, and their first for four years, is a 75 minute epic that covers far more territory than can be summed up briefly. So that's why we have our track-by-track guide to 'Imaginaerum' (released on December 5) in full, and without further ado...



'Taikatalvi'



An intro track of sorts, the album opens with chiming percussion and soft male vocals under which the instrumentals swell, more and more elements coming into play that becomes a surging, choral climax into 'Storytime'.



'Storytime'



Immediately storming into much faster, heavier and darker territories, this is, even before Anette Olzon's vocals come in, consummate Nightwish- driving, epic and richly layered with deep brass tones and sweeping strings. Later, it falls away into wordless choir and piano before the drums and guitars return before the massed choir enters. It's one of the most grandiose, atmospheric and sumptuous sequences of music Nightwish have put their name to.

 

Честно говоря, с таким описанием непохоже, что это будет песня аля Амарант и Немо.

 

'Ghost River'

Another heavy track that retains its richness through the heft, this is all dreamy melodies in the symphony and swung rhythms in the vocals which feature some beautiful interplay between Marco Hietala and Anette, before a huge orchestral break leads into crunching riffage. It's at this point it starts to become clear that the more predictable song structures of 'Dark Passion Play' have been left way, way behind and have been replaced by much more interesting, evocative composition.

'Slow, Love, Slow'



A husky, sexy and sultry jazz number (yes, jazz) with some fantastic, delicate drumming and an extraordinary vocal performance from Anette, who showcases an entirely new aspect to her abilities. Later, a fusion solo is followed by ethereal orchestrations as the metallic darkness returns, only to fade as a Louie Armstrong trumpet solo plays out over a ticking clock, rounding off a moment the like of which has never been heard from Nightwish before.

 

Ну а куда же без "хаски" и "секси"! Мор! Мор! МООООР!! И так и предвкушаю, как там Нетти могла раскрыться в джазовой тематике.

 

'I Want My Tears Back'



One of the very few straight-up verse-chorus-verse structured songs, this is all the stronger for standing out so clearly- it's big, bombastic, full of hooks and swaggering with riffage as Celtic melodies swirl around, and sounds like one the crowds will know backwards by the time Nightwish come to tour. The density of ideas is still there in force, but it's one of the more accessible numbers on an album with wonderfully too much going to take in at one sitting.

'Scaretale'



A children's choir leads into an ascending, staccato orchestral depth as the young voices are replaced by mature choral power on this racing, turbulent journey that features some sinister vocal inflections before a circus-style march emerges in a style all of Nightwish's own. The absolutely vast choir, orchestra and guitars all return in force before fairground music ends the piece.



'Arabesque'



A sweeping instrumental odyssey that once again sound enormous and genuinely epic, like the score to a gigantic adventure in the East complete with seductive dance rhythms and massive percussion, that ends suddenly and dramatically.

 

Видимо, будет нечто такое с восточными.. возможно, арабскими мотивами... да, эта Dancer явно доложна быть из этой песни.. "A sight to silence the heavens".... " />

 

'Turn Loose The Mermaids'



The start of a triad of softer songs, 'Turn Loose The Mermaid' is all acoustic guitars and soft strings that rise gently but with huge emotion. Anette's performance on vocals is once more superb, needing to carry much of the weight of the track as the instrumentals become more subtle in pipes and piano parts.

 

У меня уже с этими русалками ничего кроме 4х Пиратов в голову не лезет. %))) Честно говоря, очень интригует, о чем эта песенка будет. ^____^

 

'Rest Calm'



Initially sounding slightly like one of Rammstein's slower numbers – 'Mutter', for example – 'Rest Calm' is at it's heart beautifully soothing and tranquil, but achieves this by first storming to highlight the placid centres in between the chug.



'The Crow, The Owl And The Dove'



Acoustic guitars lilt beneath a superb duet between Marco and Anette, before Marco drops away and and the strings swell beneath the frontwoman, only for the soft vocal interplay to return. Folky sounds lead into more metal territory that falls back for the last time to piano and crooning.

 

Вот, кстати, Марко тут упоминается только в первый раз. Интересно, он в этой песне в первый раз свой голос на альбоме подаст или же в предыдущих композициях он звучит, но совсем немного? Похоже, в Имаджинэриуме Марко будет петь значительно меньше, чем в ДПП. Видимо, дали Анютке разгуляться))).

 

'Last Ride Of The Day'



The album's second simple track, this is classic Nightwish at their catchiest- rise and fall, hard and soft, crunching and luscious... it's big and pumping and sequentially if not texturally instantly comprehensible, and leads into the album's climax.



'Song Of Myself'



A four-part epic that starts with a huge orchestral attack in colossal, Danny Elfman-esque drama and sets out purposefully through the myriad of moods that between them almost surmise everything that Nightwish do best in one single track- metallic weight and pace balanced with lyrical slowness, vast, melancholy sounds of true beauty, and the moving spoken poetry in the last section brings to an end one of the most heroic achievements of the band's career.

 

Эпик! Да!! Из 4х частей!! Значит трек должен быть длинный. А значит будет мной заслушан до дыр. Я все Найтовские длинные композиции до дыр заслушиваю. %))) И с отголосками звучания Дэнни Эльфмана ааауууууыыыы!!!!!

 

'Imaginaerum'



An orchestral summation of the whole album, in effect- the huge massed wind, brass, strings and percussion recapitulate some of the highlights from the whole album, wonderfully weaving a final bow on the whole parcel.

The step up in strength from the last album is quite spectacular. All involved put in stellar performances, and Tarja is now decidedly not missed (FUCK, YEAH!!!) - Nightwish have come too far from that era, and are something different and astonishing. 'Imaginaerum' offers a vast depth of utterly splendid music.

«Именно этому арту изначально отводилась роль изображения на развороте альбома, но после того, как я и несколько моих коллег увидели финальную картину, мы сразу поняли, что поиски нужной нам альбомной обложки окончены. Я считаю, что это лучшая на данный момент работа Toxic Angel'а. (Под этим псевдонимом скрывается digital-художник Янне Питкянен, уже долгое время работающий с Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Kotipelto, Indica и прочими коллективами — прим. пер.) В ней «поймана» самая глубочайшая суть того, что есть Imaginaerum. Сила воображения и места безмолвных чудес, магии и благоговейного трепета, сила желания и сюрреалистичность.

С самого начала я подчеркнул, что на арте не должно быть изображено ни единого живого существа, и Toxic сумел воспроизвести на бумаге это безупречное, но такое заброшенное чувство — «всё это ждёт тебя, и только тебя».

Счастье, просто счастье! Вот не была весь день у компьютера, а тут такое! %))
Честно говоря, я уже не ожидала, что на альбоме будет одноименная песня: давно такого не было. =)) А арт к альбому такой... жутковатый... от него веет каким-то холодом... Если арт к синглу создает такое ощущение чего-то волшебного... какой-то чудесной интересной истории... от арта Имаджинэриума же я предвкушаю историю таинственную, жутковатую... но от этого не менее захватывающую! (Какие-то ассоциации с Тимом Бертоном и Дали возникаюм ^^) Эти рельсы, тянущиеся от самой луны, эти качели, тянущиеся от самого неба... Этот парк, находящийся словно в каком-то краторе, слегка запорошенный снегом... В этот парк, вроде бы, и хочется зайти, но в то же время создается ощущение, что далеко не все там будет ярко, весело и прекрасно: там будут и жуткие, мрачные моменты, которых нельзя избежать, как и в самой жизни...
Что касается песен, то такие земные, человечные, в некотором роде даже довольно банальные, названия соседствуют с чем-то неземным и сюрреалистичным. Это, на мой взгляд, указывает на то, что альбом будет нам повествовать историю о мире совершенно фантастическом, но главный герой - абсолютно такой же человек, как и мы, с такими же совершенно человеческими чувствами и переживаниями...

Аааааааа, у меня едет крыша!!!

И вот меня, наконец, туда запустили. %)
Дали 11 3/4 дюймовую палочку из каштана с сердцевиной дракона и отправили на Слизерин. (вин! вин! вин!)

Dragon
As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner.

The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, (как бы ай-яй-яй) though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.

Chestnut
This is a most curious, multi-faceted wood, (такое мультиличное дерево) which varies greatly in its character depending on the wand core, and takes a great deal of colour from the personality that possesses it. The wand of chestnut is attracted to witches and wizards who are skilled tamers of magical beasts, those who possess great gifts in Herbology, and those who are natural fliers. However, when paired with dragon heartstring, it may find its best match among those who are overfond of luxury and material things, and less scrupulous than they should be about how they are obtained. (а вот это уже ) Conversely, three successive heads of the Wizengamot have possessed chestnut and unicorn wands, for this combination shows a predilection for those concerned with all manner of justice.

Congratulations! I’m Prefect Gemma Farley, and I’m delighted to welcome you to SLYTHERIN HOUSE. Our emblem is the serpent, the wisest of creatures; our house colours are emerald green and silver, and our common room lies behind a concealed entrance down in the dungeons. As you’ll see, its windows look out into the depths of the Hogwarts lake. We often see the giant squid swooshing by – and sometimes more interesting creatures. (это просто ня!) We like to feel that our hangout has the aura of a mysterious, underwater shipwreck.

Now, there are a few things you should know about Slytherin – and a few you should forget.

Firstly, let’s dispel a few myths. You might have heard rumours about Slytherin house – that we’re all into the Dark Arts, and will only talk to you if your great-grandfather was a famous wizard, and rubbish like that. Well, you don’t want to believe everything you hear from competing houses. I’m not denying that we’ve produced our share of Dark wizards, but so have the other three houses – they just don’t like admitting it. And yes, we have traditionally tended to take students who come from long lines of witches and wizards, but nowadays you’ll find plenty of people in Slytherin house who have at least one Muggle parent.

Here’s a little-known fact that the other three houses don’t bring up much: Merlin was a Slytherin. (Hell, yeah!) Yes, Merlin himself, the most famous wizard in history! He learned all he knew in this very house! Do you want to follow in the footsteps of Merlin? Or would you rather sit at the old desk of that illustrious ex-Hufflepuff, Eglantine Puffett, inventor of the Self-Soaping Dishcloth?

But that’s enough about what we’re not. Let’s talk about what we are, which is the coolest and edgiest house in this school. We play to win, because we care about the honour and traditions of Slytherin.

We also get respect from our fellow students. Yes, some of that respect might be tinged with fear, because of our Dark reputation, but you know what? It can be fun, having a reputation for walking on the wild side. Chuck out a few hints that you’ve got access to a whole library of curses, and see whether anyone feels like nicking your pencil case. (ня-ня-ня! ^^)

But we’re not bad people. We’re like our emblem, the snake: sleek, powerful, and frequently misunderstood. (Fuck, yeah!)

For instance, we Slytherins look after our own – which is more than you can say for Ravenclaw. Apart from being the biggest bunch of swots you ever met, Ravenclaws are famous for clambering over each other to get good marks, whereas we Slytherins are brothers. (Второй наброс на остальные факультеты )The corridors of Hogwarts can throw up surprises for the unwary, and you’ll be glad you’ve got the Serpents on your side as you move around the school. As far as we’re concerned, once you’ve become a snake, you’re one of ours – one of the elite. (и снова паааафос)

Because you know what Salazar Slytherin looked for in his chosen students? The seeds of greatness. You’ve been chosen by this house because you’ve got the potential to be great, in the true sense of the word. All right, you might see a couple of people hanging around the common room whom you might not think are destined for anything special. Well, keep that to yourself. If the Sorting Hat put them in here, there’s something great about them, and don’t you forget it.

And talking of people who aren’t destined for greatness, I haven’t mentioned the Gryffindors. Now, a lot of people say that Slytherins and Gryffindors represent two sides of the same coin. Personally, I think Gryffindors are nothing more than wannabe Slytherins. span class="offtop">(Ну вот, снова! ) Mind you, some people say that Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor prized the same kinds of students, so perhaps we are more similar than we like to think. But that doesn’t mean that we cosy up with Gryffindors. They like beating us only slightly less than we like beating them.

A few more things you might need to know: our house ghost is the Bloody Baron. If you get on the right side of him he’ll sometimes agree to frighten people for you. Just don’t ask him how he got bloodstained; he doesn’t like it.

The password to the common room changes every fortnight. Keep an eye on the noticeboard. Never bring anyone from another house into our common room or tell them our password. No outsider has entered it for more than seven centuries.

Well, I think that’s all for now. I’m sure you’ll like our dormitories. We sleep in ancient four-posters with green silk hangings, and bedspreads embroidered with silver thread. Medieval tapestries depicting the adventures of famous Slytherins cover the walls, and silver lanterns hang from the ceilings. You’ll sleep well; it’s very soothing, listening to the lake water lapping against the windows at night.

Ох ты! А этому дневничку уже больше года! И за это время я успела оставить в нем 11 страниц. %)) Есть, все же, в дневниках положительные свойства - у тебя появляется возможность хоть как-то взглянуть на себя со стороны.
Приятно осознавать, что жизнь наполнена какими-то событиями (пусть и не всегда счастливыми), и что в голове есть какие-то загоны и бзики, которые хочется запечатлеть для себя на будущее или обсудить с друзьями.
Люблю свою жизнь: со всеми её удачами и фейлами, скукой и сумасбродным безумием. ^_^
